Both rainbow trout and striped bass continued to be active at Los Vaqueros in the first couple of weeks of the New Year.
Chris Senti of the Los Vaqueros Marina gave fishing for trout a “very good” rating. Anglers fishing with bait in the south cove and cowboy cove are bagging fish averaging 1-1/2 pounds.
“Limits continue to be been common for skilled anglers,” he said. “5,000 pounds of trout from Mt. Lassen Fishery were planted in December, with the latest plant going in the second week of January."
“5 pound and larger fish are continuing to be caught both from boats and from the shore. Several 8 and 9 pound trout were caught from both the shore and boats last week,” stated Senti.
Garlic scented power bait in rainbow and chartreuse, orange or white mice tails and nightcrawlers are all good choices Throwing lures, including Kastmasters and Krocodiles, in silver, silver-blue and gold pattern, is also productive.
Trolling for trout is rated fair to excellent for boaters Kastmasters, Roostertails, Rebels, Rapalas, and Thomas Buoyants. Rental boaters are also catching trout on bait and by casting lures in the major coves. Limits of trout are being caught in both Cowboy and Peninsula Coves.
With the cooler weather, the striper bite is slower. There have been a few fish reported caught on lures and cut anchovies. Some savvy anglers are catching limits 18 to 23 inch fish.
“Some anglers have been working the shore around structure and several largemouth bass have been caught and released, including a 5+ lb fish by the first fishing pier,” said Senti.
The water level is at 130,000 acre-feet. “We anticipate the water level to remain mostly stable. With the cooler weather our water temperature has stabilized at around 52-53 degrees,” he added.Back To Reports
