(Livermore) Rainbow trout lead the winter angling parade at Los Vaqueros Reservoir, with a number of large fish weighed in at the marina lately. Limits continue to be been common for skilled anglers fishing from shore and rental boats.
Sharon Rivergo topped the catches with s10.72 lb. rainbow that she fooled with garlic PowerBait during a shore fishing adventure in the South Cove. Octavio Vega caught a 6.72 lb. rainbow while soaking Power Bait in Cowboy Cove, reported Brian Demnnik of Los Vaqueros Marina.
Another Drogoneti landed a 5.68 lb. rainbow while casting out a Kastmaster. “He said it came from a secret spot,” Demunnik stated.
“January saw 7500 pounds of trout planted, with the latest plants being 1000 pounds from Mt. Lassen planted and an additional 2000 pounds from Fish and Wildlife,” he stated.
Garlic scented PowerBait in rainbow and chartreuse, orange or white Mice Tails and nightcrawlers are all good choices Throwing lures, including Kastmasters and Krocodiles, in silver, silver-blue and gold pattern, is also productive.
Trollers are using Kastmasters, Roostertails, Rebels, Rapalas, and Thomas Buoyants. Rental boaters are also catching trout on bait and by casting lures in Cowboy and Peninsula coves.
“We’re seeing increasing activity on stripers,” noted Demunnik. “Anglers are hooking 19 to 24 inch fish while fishing anchovies from shore. Rental boaters are trolling Rapalas near the marina.”
The water level is around 128,000 acre feet and slowly dropping. The water temperature has stabilized at around 52-53 degrees.
