Good Salmon Fishing Reported During Season’s Final Stretch

Species: River Salmon Steelhead
Location: Sacramento River- Middle,

The salmon season on the Sacramento River ended on December 16, with solid fishing for quality fish reported in the season’s final two weeks.

“The late season salmon fishing picked up in the Verona and Knights Landing areas right before the end of the season,” said Rob Reimers of Rustic Rob’s Guide Service. “On my last trip, Michael O'Donoghue and Dale Bergerson landed two salmon weighing 20 and 14 pounds, lost two more and had two more take downs.”

Tim Patterson of Woodland also landed two kings going 14 and 16 pounds while fishing in the same area at Knights Landing the same day. “Every one of the five boats reported at least one salmon,” he noted.

“On the trip before, Ron Gaston bagged one chrome bright 15 lb king, lost another and had one more take down,” he stated.

Reimers anchor fished with Brad’s Killer Fish in chartreuse/silver to hook the big Chinooks.

Reports on steelhead fishing success have been few and far between, with few anglers even trying. Likewise, rain is needed to raise and warm the river to spur the sturgeon to move up the river to spawn.
