High Country Anglers Battle Trout And ‘Kokes

Written By: Cal Kellogg, June 9, 2014
Species: Kokanee Trout
Location: Lake Almanor, Bucks Lake,

“Boy, have I ever been on the road recently. I’ve been fishing at Almanor, Bucks and Lake Davis over the past few days,” related Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy’s Guide Service.

“At Almanor we are getting some big fish ranging up to the 4 to 6 pound class. Most of these fish are rainbows, but there are browns and kings mixed in too. Our hook ups are coming on spoons like Speedy Shiners and Needlefish,” said Roccucci.

“The bite at Bucks has changed quite a bit over the past couple weeks. These days the kokanee bite is wide open, with most of the fish running about 12 inches. We had been getting good numbers of big mackinaw. This action has backed off, but some macks are still available. Trout have been scattered and tough to find,” disclosed Roccucci.

“Lake Davis is very good for rainbows averaging a solid 16 to 18 inches. The fish are near the surface. We’ve been hooking up on both Dick Nites and Needlefish. Flies often work well at Davis, but I haven’t had much success with them so far this season,” Roccucci concluded.
