Hit The Trout Early

Species: Trout
Location: Klamath River, McClure Reservoir,

Want to hook rainbow trout on the Upper Klamath River? You’re going to have to get on the river early in the morning before the hot temperatures turn off the bite, advised Scott Caldwell of SC Guide Service.

“You should back bounce bait, pull crawdad plugs or cast flies in sculpin patterns in the stretch from below the Iron Gate Fish Hatchery to Interstate Five,” said Caldwell.

Expect to hook fish in the 10 to 18 inch range, as well as some larger fish up to 4 pounds.

Klamath River releases below Iron Gate Dam are now 907 cfs. Flows at Klamath are 2310 cfs with a water temperature of 72.68 degrees.

McCloud Reservoir is producing superb trout fishing. “My son Conner and I caught a bunch of rainbow and brown trout from ¾ to 2 pounds today,” divulged Scott Caldwell of SC Guide Service on Friday, July 11. "We trolled Sep’s Pro Secrets, K-7 Kwikfish and Apex lures in frog patterns behind Sep’s Dodgers at 35 to 50 feet deep.”
