Irvine Lake Catfish and Bass Are Active
Lots of nice stringers of catfish came in this week at Irvine Lake, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. “The catfish bite on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings was really good”, observed Getty. “It’s all those good eating-size 3 to 6-pounders; the big ones seem to be a little discombobulated this week. Best action has been from around 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, at anything from 5 to 30 feet.”
Getty added, “Lake regular Marty Sauceda caught a huge 17-pound carp while fishing for catfish. He released it into the Kids Lagoon so that some lucky youngster will get the thrill of a lifetime trying to crank it in!”
Most of the catfish on the stringers are prime eating-size channel cats. Best baits have been mackerel, shrimp, and bonito, with productive spots including the west shore, Boat Dock Cove, and the flats.
Bass anglers were again pretty tight-lipped, which is usually a sure indication of an outstanding bite. The few bassers willing to talk mentioned good numbers of 2 to 5-pound largemouth at 15-20 feet on hard structure during the day, and moving up into the shallows at dusk.
No anglers targeted crappie, but the few who went after bluegill found plenty in the shallows on mealworms. A handful of hybrid striped bass and carp were caught incidentally by catfish anglers soaking mackerel.
Families with children age 12 and under found fair numbers of small carp and 1 to 3-pound catfish in the Kids Lagoon on mackerel. Surface temperature on the main lake is 76 degrees, with underwater visibility rated as gin clear. The lake level is dropping slowly, with the West Shore Road now open to vehicles about halfway to the dam.
The 2013-14 Trout Season Openers will be on Friday Nov. 1, with a special limited-entry VIP Fishing Day on Thursday, Oct. 31. Thousands of pounds of trout will be stocked just prior to the opener.
Outstanding catches of the week at Irvine Lake included:
