The Fish Sniffer - It’s Shad And Smallmouth Time!
It’s Shad And Smallmouth Time!

Written By: Danny Lloyd, June 12, 2014
Species: Bass Shad
Location: Sonoma Lake, Russian River,

Anglers are experiencing "on and off" shad fishing on the lower Russian River. River flows are down, but expect more water to be released, reported Dave from King Sport and Tackle in Guernveille.

The Russian River's flows dropped and water temperatures are in the mid sixties. Shad fishing has been hit and miss for anglers, but stick to shad flies and darts in bright colors. The most consistent fishing has been at Johnson's Beach.".

"Smallmouth  bass have been biting lately all throughout the river. With the warmer water, expect the bass fishing to continue to remain good, and expect shad fishing to improve,” he forecasted.

Expect the landlocked steelhead action at Lake Sonoma to pick up as the weather warms and the thermocline forms. Troll with Apex lures, other minnow imitation lures and night crawlers in the main body near the marina and dam for maximum success.
