Jacksmelt Dominate Late Winter Catches

(Oyster Point) Jacksmelt and perch are plentiful for anglers working the pier, while the sturgeon, shark and ray action has taken a back seat.

Smelt were being landed throughout the conversation with John Akina Sr. of Oyster Point Bait and Tackle, with many anglers cashing in on the action on the Oyster Point Pier.

"They're also catching a lot of perch off to the side of the pier," Akina added. Shrimp, and pile worms were his recommendations for bait.

Although sturgeon fishing is slow, a few anglers continue to toss herring and ghost shrimp.  "One guy fishing off the pier reported losing a halibut while fishing herring for sturgeon," Akina related.

"I haven't seen very many sharks or rays caught, but they're out there," he added.
