King Salmon To 5 Pounds Go On Bite At Shasta

Species: Landlocked Salmon Trout Bass Kokanee
Location: Shasta Lake, Whiskeytown Reservoir,

(Redding) This has been the year for landlocked kings at Lake Shasta. For several weeks the hot bite was in the Dry Creek Arm. When that bite died, anglers lost the fish for a period of time, but now they’ve  reappeared and anglers are hooking some handsome fish while trolling from Toupee Island all the way up past the I-5 Bridge and into the McCloud River Arm.

“The kings are running large and there are lots of them,” related Mike Elster of Mike’s Fishing Guide Service. “The area around the I-5 Bridge has been hot for trollers and lots of big kings up 5 pounds are being landed. The key to success is working the deep water of the channel. The salmon are holding from 80 feet deep on down. The top offering has been white hoochie rigged behing a large Sling Blade. The shad have hatched and there are lots of small shad available so the kings want a bait with a small profile at this time.”

“There are rainbows on tap at Shasta too. For trout work from 40 to 60 feet deep with small shad imitating spoons. Hum Dingers have been working great for the rainbows,” tipped Elster.

Bass anglers continue to land 15 to 25 fish per day. The average bass is a 10 to 14 inch spot, but larger fish show early and late in the day. During low light periods the spots will come up and nail surface plugs worked off main points. During the daylight hours soft plastics and vertical presentations are the way to go.

“The kokanee bite at Whiskeytown is super productive. Easy limits of salmon to 14 inches are the rule for anglers pulling pink Apex Lures, pink hoochies and green Uncle Larry’s bugs. I’m running everything behind Sling Blades,” Elster continued.
