Landlocked king salmon fishing at Folsom Lake has turned on the past few weeks with limits being taken near Anderson Island top lining Rapalas.
Cody Resendes and his fishing partner Ben Raynal fished Folsom this week out of Granite Bay. "We set our rods out as soon as we got out of the launch and made a left heading up the north fork arm towards Rattlesnake," reported Resendes. "We didn't get our first bite till Anderson Island where we landed the largest of the day, a 19 inch king salmon."
They continued to fish the island area trolling an assortment of gear including a brown trout Needlefish, two J-7 Rapalas in shad patterns, and a 1/4 ounce Kastmaster in a blue/silver pattern. "All 11 fish came on the black/white J-7 Rapala set back around 225 feet behind the boat," reported Raynal.
"The trout bite has been very good with very nice holdover rainbows being taken on Needlefish and hoochies trolled behind a sling blade dodger," said James Netzel of Fishin’ James Guide Service. "We have been catching mostly holdover rainbows to 19 inches that are very healthy.”
He also reported that fish have been caught in the top 20 feet of water with many being taken top lining lures 225-275 feet behind the boat. “I have been working the area from Granite Bay Launch to the front of the dam for best results. Troll shallow early and move down as the sun comes out," suggested Netzel.
Bass fishermen have seen some good fishing these past few weeks as the weather has been unusually warm. Local fisherman Craig Andri reported catching over 15 fish to 3 pounds during a recent trip. "The hot lure was my white robo worm drop shotted on a Shimano Crucial medium light action rod with P-Line 6 pound CX line," reported Andri.
At press time Folsom is holding 58 percent of lake's capacity and 74 percent of the 10 year average.
