The Fish Sniffer - Kings Take Center Stage At Almanor
Kings Take Center Stage At Almanor

Written By: Cal Kellogg, May 13, 2014
Species: Trout Landlocked Salmon Kokanee
Location: Lake Almanor, Bucks Lake,

For the past several weeks browns and rainbows were grabbing the headlines at Lake Almanor, as fish up to and beyond 6 pounds were landed. These days the scene has changed. A few trout are being caught, but it’s the lake’s kings that are providing much of the action.

“The king salmon bite is outstanding at Almanor,” disclosed Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy’s Guide Service. “We’ve gotten a handful of 3 pound kings, but most of the salmon run from 4 to 5 pounds. Early in the morning we are targeting them along the east shore where they are feeding heavily on pond smelt. We are fooling the fish while slow trolling a variety of different soft plastics. When that bite winds down we move further offshore, rig up with Speedy Shiners and other spoons and speed up our trolling to 3 mph.”

“When I’m not fishing Almanor I’ve been at Bucks. We’ve taken several macks in the 8 to 15 pound class along with a bunch of rainbows, browns and kokanee. In the coming weeks I’ll be spending a lot of time at Bucks, but I’ll be running some trips at Almanor and Lake Davis too,” added Roccucci.
