Kokanee salmon season at Lake Tahoe looks to be underway with some very nice fish being caught over the past couple of weeks.
“I got a call the other day from a friend saying he was catching some kokanee while fishing the South Shore area,” reported Rick Kennedy of Tight Lines Guide Service. “My last trip on Tahoe was a bit slow, but after spending a few months on stripers I am looking forward to getting on Tahoe in the next week or so.”
Reports from fellow guides indicated the kokanee were being caught trolling a dodger/spoon or fly combo tipped with corn in the 25-50 foot water depth. The fish are not congregated yet so hooking multiple fish might take 20 seconds up to an hour
Zack Gordon at Tahoe Sportfishing reported top-notch mackinaw action while working the west and south shores. “We are catching limits of fish from 2 to 6 pounds on the morning trips, he said. “Fishing has been a little tougher in the afternoons. We’re trolling minnows behind flashers.”
Mickey Daniels of Mickey’s Big Mack Charters continues to report limit-style fishing for mackinaw trout. He has been trolling the shallows early in the morning and moving deeper throughout the day trolling minnows with a flasher or dodger off the bottom.
Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Sportfishing has been catching limits of mackinaw to 10 pounds trolling off Cave Rock Point with minnows behind a dodger in 160-220 feet of water.
Mike Nielsen at Tahoe Topliners Sportfishing reported, “I have been concentrating on brown trout most of this past week. Trolling Rapala Scatter Raps and Luhr Jensen Flash Flies at 10 to 15 feet over 17 to 25 feet of water have been producing good catches of mostly 2-to-4 ½ -pound browns.”
