Kokanee And Mackinaw Provide Limits For Summer Anglers

(South Lake Tahoe) Summer fishing is peaking at Lake Tahoe. Kokanee anglers are busting limits of salmon that range up to 20 inches. Mackinaw trollers are also getting limits, but their fish range up into the 12 pound class. In addition to these species, the occasional brown and rainbow have shown for anglers pulling kokanee gear. Now is the time to visit Tahoe for exciting mixed bag action.

The folks at Tahoe Sportfishing have hosted some epic fishing trips recently. Captain John and deckhand Paul took the Prophet out on August 7 and put their clients on excellent mixed bag fishing with mackinaw to 6 pounds, plentiful kokanee and a bonus 3 pound rainbow.

The same afternoon, Captain Cesar took out his family for quick limits of kokanee and an 8 pound bonus mack.

On July 31 a skillful angler hooked and landed an impressive 13.8 pound mack on the Hopper V.

Captain Rick Kennedy of Tight Lines Guide Service has been fishing Tahoe heavily.

“I’m mainly targeting kokanee at Tahoe and my clients have been nailing steady limits,” said Kennedy. “If you want the bigger ‘kokes the fishing will be a little slower, but if you want big numbers of 13 and 14 inch fish the action is wide open. You can also nail limits of mackinaw now while trolling deep water, but most of the calls I’ve been getting are from anglers interested in kokanee.”

“I’ve been getting most of the kokanee on pink Uncle Larry’s Spinners trolled behind Gold Star dodgers and tipped with red Pautzke Fire Corn. Look for the salmon to be holding from 80 to 120 feet deep,” tipped Kennedy.

Both Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Mickey Daniels of Mickey’s Big Mack Charters are enjoying productive deep water mackinaw fishing.

Daniels is trolling deep water at the north end using Kok-A-Nuts, Sting King and other lures for limit numbers of mackinaw that range up to 7 pounds.

St. Denis has been moving around the lake a bit. He’s been working deep water with dodgers and minnows for limits of mackinaw that range up to 11 pounds.
