The Fish Sniffer - Kokes and Kings Pace Catches
Kokes and Kings Pace Catches

Written By: Danny Lloyd, June 2, 2014
Species: Kokanee Trout Bass
Location: Shasta Lake, Whiskeytown Reservoir,

Trout and bass are biting at both Shasta and Whiskeytown Lakes, but it[s landlocked salmon in the form of kokanee and kings that are creating the most excitement.

Shasta Lake rainbows and browns are being caught from the surface to 50 feet deep. Rainbows respond best to shad imitating spoons like Cripplures, Excels and Pro Secrets, while rigged baitfish is the way to go if you want to hook a brown.

The salmon bite is very consistent with fish spread from 20 feet to over 100. The main body and coves near the dam have been booting out number of kings to 5 pounds. Rigged shad are the most productive bait, but rigged anchovies, plug cut anchovies, Apex Lures and hoochies are drawing strikes too.

“The trout bite is a bit challenging at Shasta because the fish are spread out, but before long well see that change. In the next couple weeks the trout should start to concentrate with rising water temperatures. When that happens, trout fishing will get really good,” predicted Mike Elster of Mike’s Fishing Guide Service.

Bass anglers are enjoying very good action at Shasta, but most of the bass weigh less than 2 pounds. Soft plastics work all day, while rip baits take fish early and late. The best fishing is in the Pit River Arm, but almost all structure in the lake from the surface to 30 feet deep holds spotted bass.

The lake level is 975.91 feet above sea level and just 91.09 feet below full pool. The lake is 51 percent of capacity.

“Kokanee are hitting a variety of lures at Whiskeytown and the fish we are catching are very clean and plump,” said Elster. “The fishing is only going to get better as we move toward summer.”

If you’d like to boat a bunch of Whiskeytown kokanee or Shasta kings or both, give Mike Elster a call @ 916-215-6330.
