Landlocked Kings Beginning To Show

Species: Landlocked Salmon Kokanee Trout
Location: Trinity River, Trinity Lake,

(Weaverville) The king salmon fishing on Trinity Lake isn’t hot by any means, but a few fish are starting to appear in the catches.

“I fished two days at Trinity over the past week,” said Mike Elster of Mike’s Fishing Guide Service. “I caught three kings measuring 13, 14 and 15 inches, along with a wild 8 incher. I found the best action while trolling 3-inch watermelon Apex lures and Speedy Shiners at 60 to 80 feet deep. Two of fish hit in front of the dam, while the other two hit in the Stewarts Fork.”

“On the following day, I only hooked one 5 inch kokanee and no kings. The lake is just full of small kokanee; they are as thick as the threadfin shad are at Lake Shasta.”

Rainbow trout fishing is decent for bank anglers fishing the mouths of the tributaries on Trinity Lake, according to Tim Brady at Trinity Outdoors. Anglers are using a variety of offerings, including PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs, spinners and spoons.

“Bass fishing continues to be good for anglers fishing Senkos and Gitzits at 15 to 25 feet deep at Trinity,” said Brady. “I have heard of some 3 to 4 lb. smallmouths and quality largemouths caught there lately.”

For rainbow trout at Trinity Lake, Brady recommended trolling with nightcrawlers behind Seps Sidekicks.

Reports on spring Chinook fishing success on the Trinity River are very scarce. Bank anglers should toss out tuna balls and roe, while boaters should Kwikfish with sardine wrappers from Douglas City on up.”

Trinity Lake is holding 913,231 acre-feet of water, 37 percent of capacity and 46 percent of average. Releases to the Trinity River below Lewiston are 450 cfs.
