The Fish Sniffer - Mavericks Surfing Competition Highlight for Party Boats
Mavericks Surfing Competition Highlight for Party Boats

The Body Glove Mavericks Invitational took place on Friday, January 24 amidst a 30 to 40 foot swell, and all party boats sold out within hours.

The Huli Cat, New Captain Pete, and Salty Lady provided a platform for observers to get close to the action, and the consensus was the Coast Guard did an outstanding job of keeping the flotilla moving while riding near the Mavericks Reef north of Pillar Point. This was the highlight so far this winter, as party boats are having a difficult time filling up for sand dab/crab combination trips.

Captain Tom Mattusch of the Huli Cat is the only large party boat running the combination trips, and he said, “There are crab to be had out there since my pots are in the water, and we haven’t turned them over recently.”

Anglers should expect to bring home a number of sand crabs in addition to limit of Dungeness crab on the lightly-attended ventures. Mattusch is taking two rockfish research trips for the Moss Landing Marine Laboratory with a trip to the Farallons on January 30 and to the Deep Reef on February 3.

Out of Half Moon Bay Sport Fishing, the Queen of Hearts and Riptide will shut down sport fishing for the season, but they will take whale watching trips until the anticipated salmon opener in April. The shop will remain open 7 days per week during the winter.
