A bank angler fishing on the Sacramento River near Grimes landed a 55 lb. striped bass at night in early June.

“The fish was 50 inches long and had an unbelievable girth,” said Raith Heryford of RH Guide Service. “The fisherman, Alejandro, fooled the fish with a Rebel lure at around 10 pm.”

Heryford has found solid striped bass action on recent night fishing adventures in the Colusa area. “The fishing lately has been as good as it has been all season,” said Heryford. “We’re averaging 20 fish per night, with an average of 5 keepers and 15 shakers.”

“The fish are hitting white swimbaits, black plastic worms and top water lures,” said Heryford. “We’re fishing from 6 pm to 1 am. On my latest trip, we released two hens in the 15 lb. range. Some fresh fish that haven’t spawned are still showing.”

Bob Boucke at Johnson’s Bait and Tackle confirmed the good striper action on the Sacramento, noting that anglers are catching striped bass on jumbo minnows, plastic worms, swimbaits and cut baits between Ward’s Landing and Colusa.
