Trout fishing at Folsom Lake has slowed down over the past few weeks, but don't think limits aren't possible. RJ Hartmann and his fishing partner fished Folsom this week and decided to explore up the north fork past Rattlesnake Launch Area.
They went about as far as they could upriver and tried casting some spoons. “On my first cast I threw my 1/4 ounce Kastmaster in a black/silver pattern up as far as I could in the rapids and BOOM, FISH ON!” R.J. said. After a fun fight they had the first trout of the day measuring17 inches .
They continued to fish spoons in the rapids area and in less than 30 minutes had 4 fish over 15 inches on the boat. After about 20 minutes and no more takers they got the down riggers back out and started to troll the area back towards the dam.
"We had our 4 rods set, two on the topwater pulling a J-7 Rapala in silver/black and the other rod with a 1/4 ounce Kastmaster in the Blue/Silver pattern,” relayed Hartmann. “The hot lure turned out to be a Vance's Tackle Slim Fin in the SS2 size in a nickel finish."
Bass fishermen are still giving “hit and miss” reports. Those anglers fishing the lake often seem to have an advantage and are catching some very nice bass, including a nice 3 1/2 pound smallmouth boated last week. Cody Resendes caught that fish while working a brown custom tied jig off the shallow points.
Landlocked king salmon are still being caught between Granite Bay Launch and the dam. James Netzel of Fishin' James Guide Service suggested, "Try using a spoon or my favorite a Shasta Tackle 1/2 ounce Humdinger in the white glow pattern. I will top line these in the morning and work my way down as the sun comes up. Recently I hooked over 6 kings at 6 feet on the down rigger," said Netzel.
At press time Folsom is holding 56 percent of lake's capacity and 75 percent of the 10 year average.
