“The weather has been ‘beyond normal,’” said Joe Mendes of Eagle Eye Charters out of Crosby’s Lodge. “This is messing with the fish’s mentality.”
Numbers of cutthroats have been limited with Mendes reporting, “Six fish is a good day, and a dozen fish is an exceptional outing, but every trip brings the possibility of a huge fish as we have caught and released a cutthroat over 12 pounds on three of our past four trips with fish at 14, 13.7, and 12.5-pounds released.”
With the waters calm, he has been working in deeper water with the top lines weighed down by a 1.5-ounce banana weight 150 to 200 feet behind the boat working much better than downriggers at the present time. The U20 Flatfish in ‘Bloody Frog,’ or pearl white are the top lures, and Mendes has been concentrating around Indian Head, Warrior, Dago Bay, and Blockhouse with the east side of the lake not currently producing.
Rob Anderson of Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing said, “The action has really slowed down at the lake, but this is pretty common for this time of year. The water temperature is very cold in the 41 to 43 degree range, and the wind hasn’t been blowing, so the thermocline is rising and sending the Lahontan cutthroats into deeper and warmer water.”
Float tubes have been providing the best access to the fishing grounds, and Anderson reported, “There was a fish over 20 pounds and one in the 15-pound range landed in the past week from float tubers. Maholo nymphs and midges are working for nymphing while Bloody Marys, Olive Martinis, Loco Beetles, and Tadpoles with fast-sinking lines are the top fly set ups.”
The major tournament season is here with Crosby’s Lodge 27th annual President’s Day Event taking place the weekends of February 8 and 15. Registration forms are available at http://www.crosbylodge.net/images/DerbyEntryForm2014.pdf.Back To Reports
