This has been a great winter for bass fishing at Clear Lake, in spite of low water conditions.
Fishing with jumbo minnows during the most recent trip that Don Paganelli of Paganelli’s Bass Fishing Experience made to the lake was as good as it gets.
“We caught and released 33 fish the first day and 30 fish the next day,” said Paganelli. “The smallest fish was 4 pounds and the largest was 8.5 pounds. We also landed two smallmouth bass. We fished from 5 to 15 feet deep.”
While the sizzling action has tapered off since then, the action is still very good. “My buddy reported catching 10 fish on one trip and 15 on the next,” he said. “All were excellent quality largemouth."
“Anglers are also using deep-diving crankbaits and Alabama rigs off the rocks,” he noted. “The best fishing is from the Narrows south.”
Paganelli hasn’t heard of any crappie being taken lately, but he said the channel catfish action is excellent, with fish up to 20 pounds reported by boaters fishing cut baits.
