Quality Stripers On Move Into San Joaquin

Location: Sacramento River- Delta, San Joaquin Delta,

(Stockton) Striped bass action on the San Joaquin River is heating up with numbers of fish moving into the system.

Alan Fong of the Fishermen’s Warehouse in Sacramento reported, “Striper fishing is off-the-hook in the San Joaquin from the mouth of False River to Sherman Island. One angler reported catching and releasing over 40 fish to 3 pounds with a number in the 10-pound class jigging spoons. Trollers are working the San Joaquin on the incoming tide after running plugs in the Sacramento River on the outgoing tide.”

Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor, confirmed the schools of stripers, landing linesides to 8 pounds using a ¾-ounce Hopkins Smoothie spoon in blue or green with a small twitch above the meter marks. He said, “Most of the stripers are small, but there are some quality fish in the mix. Just twitching the lure above the marks is guaranteed to hook a fish on the drop.”

Captain Stan Koenigsberger of Quetzal Adventures out of Bethel Harbor continued to find numbers of small striped bass either trolling or anchoring on the San Joaquin River. They trolled between Marker 28 and Eddo’s with deep-diving P-Line Predators for 28 striped bass including two limits of legal fish.

For largemouth bass, Randy Pringle reported catching and releasing over 50 largemouth bass on a recent trip with two teenaged clients tossing the flat plastics in earth tones on a Zappu Head using 8-pound test on a spinning rod. “The action was non-stop,” he said.

Bluegill remained a great option from Eight Mile Road, Whiskey Slough, Bacon Island Road, and Holland Tract with wax worms or jumbo red worms. Catfish can be found throughout the system in the San Joaquin with anchovies, sardines, mackerel, shad, chicken livers, or frozen clams.
