The Fish Sniffer - Rain Is Needed To Perk Steelhead Bite
Rain Is Needed To Perk Steelhead Bite

Written By: Dan Bacher, December 17, 2013
Species: Steelhead
Location: American River - Lower,

The upper stretch of the American River from below the Nimbus Fish Hatchery will reopen for steelhead fishing on January 1. Last year's opener, when high, colored water conditions prevailed, produced good fishing for bank anglers and boaters.

However, rain is needed to warm and color up the river. If low, clear and cold conditions continue to plague the river, anglers can expect to see very tough fishing in the New Year.

Meanwhile, very few anglers are fishing the river for steelhead in the stretch that remains open below the SMUD powerline at the southwest boundary of Ancil Hoffman Park. Fishermen should use salmon roe, nightcrawlers, spinners, plugs and spoons for the steelhead.

A few people continue to target dark salmon in Nimbus Basin, but most of the kings are spawning or have already spawned.

Releases from Nimbus Dam continue to be 1250 cfs.
