Lake Shasta is providing solid action, but if you want to taste the best reservoir fishing available in the north valley, Whiskeytown is the place to visit. The kokanee bite is on fire and it’s only going to get better.
“I can only keep two rods in the water when I kokanee fish at Whiskeytown, that’s how good the bite is right now,” exclaimed Mike Elster of Mike’s Fishing Guide Service. “I’m getting fish at both the cold water curtain and near the bridge. The curtain fish are holding a bit deeper than the bridge fish. At the bridge I’m at 60 feet on the deep end. At the curtain I’m getting fish down to 80.”
“The hot lures have been either a pink Apex or hoochie rigged behind a Sling Blade. You can easily put 4 to 5 limits of 12 to 13.5 inch salmon in the boat in a 3 to 4 hours period,” added Elster.
Elster has also been spending time chasing kings and rainbows at Lake Shasta.
“We had been enjoying fantastic king salmon fishing in Dry Creek, but the last time I went in there the salmon had disappeared. We got a number of very nice rainbows up to a 19 inch 3.25 pounder, but I have no idea where the kings went. We’ll find them and when we do I’m confident the bite will still be on.”
“I’ve also done some trolling for rainbows up near the Shasta Caverns on the McCloud Arm of the lake. We’ve taken good numbers of rainbows up there, including a long lean 19 incher that only went 2.5 pounds. Rolled shad have been the ticket at Shasta,” tipped Elster.
In the bass fishing arena the most exciting fishing is taking place early and late in the day when you can get the spots to come up and hit poppers and walking baits. The rest of the day the bite is solid on soft plastic and Senkos worked off main points.
Shasta is currently down 113 feet and is dropping about 8/10 of a foot per day. Boat launching is no problem at this time.
