(Redding) If you want to hook fish while trolling, rainbow trout offer the most consistent action at Lake Shasta now.
“Rainbow fishing has been good, but I haven’t been able to find the king salmon lately,” said Mike Elster of Mike’s Fishing Guide Service.
On his latest trolling adventure, he landed two rainbows weighing 2-1/2 and 3-1/4 pounds while trolling shad at 60 to 80 feet at the dam, but didn’t locate any salmon. “I could have limited out on the trout if I had continued fishing there,” he noted.
On his previous trip, two anglers fishing with Elster bagged limits of rainbows ranging from 16 to 19 inches and from 2 to 2-1/2 pounds while trolling in Bridge Bay. The fish hit rolled shad, Apex lures and Hum Dingers at 40 to 80 feet deep.
Bass fishing is in its mid-summer pattern at Shasta, with anglers finding solid top water bait with Zara Spooks and Pop-Rs in the mornings. “In the late afternoons, you can also throw out spinnerbaits and crankbaits, in addition to the top water lures,” advised Tony Messer at Phil’s Propellers.
“During the day, drop shotting worms and fishing tubes at 15 to 30 feet deep is your best bet,” said Messer. “The best patterns are Mother’s Finest #14 and #39 worms. 90 to 95 percent of the fish are spotted bass, with a few smallmouths showing in the river arms.”
Messer noted that anglers are hooking some larger bass at night while working spinners baits off the points.
Lake Shasta is holding 1,644,468 acre-feet of water, 36 percent of capacity and 49percent of average.Back To Reports
