Salmon fishing is tough, but anglers are nailing limits of rockfish and big numbers of lingcod off Point Sur and the local reefs.

The latest fishing adventure to Point Sur by the Kahuna yielded limits of both rockfish and lingcod to 20 pounds for 14 anglers. .They also released one salmon, according to Carol Jones at Kahuna Sportfishing.

“Salmon fishing is on hold until it picks up,” said Jones. “We are still looking for the water conditions for albacore.”

The 14 anglers bagged 6 salmon and released 20 on their most recent salmon mooching adventure.

“Rockfish and lingcod fishing is good and salmon action is horrible,” reported Chris Arcoleo of Chris’ Fishing Trips in Monterey.

The 20 anglers on a trip aboard the Check Mate landed one salmon and limits of rockfish on Sunday, July 13. The 30 anglers on the Check Mate bagged ¾ limits of rockfish and 30 lingcod the same day.

On July 12, the 11 anglers on the Star of Monterey took limits of rockfish and 4 lingcod, the 24 passengers on the Check Mate bagged limits of rockfish and 15 lingcod, and the 23 anglers on the Caroline caught limits of rockfish and 10 lingcod.

Rockfish and lingcod are also the main quarry off Santa Cruz, but some salmon, white seabass and halibut are also showing.

“There were a few salmon caught near Pajaro in 110-160 feet of water on July 13,” according to Bayside Marine. “The anglers trolled 50-90 feet down.”

“Some seabass were caught near the Mile Buoy and Pleasure Point in 70 feet of water. Anglers trolling and drifting fresh squid in 40-60 feet of water are still taking some halibut near Capitola and the Cement Ship,” the shop reported.
