Far to the north of Bodega Bay in Eureka the salmon action is red hot, but for Bodega anglers the bite has been pretty chilly. As a result charter skippers have been targeting rockfish and the results have been outstanding. Limits are the rule and lingcod up to 26 pounds have been reported.
The past week has been pretty crazy for Captain Tim Wong of NorCal Sportfishing Adventures. Tim has been pounding out steady limits of quality rockfish and big numbers of lingcod. One recent outing yielded boat limits of 16 lings that ranged up to 25 pounds.
Wong continues to probe for salmon and trolling has produced a handful of hookups and some handsome fish. Many Bodega skippers are predicting a late push of fish toward the end of the month. If that happens in any real way some gigantic fish should show for Sonoma County anglers.
Captain David Hammond of Delta Pro Fishing is also hammering out limits of rockfish and lingcod, but he has his sights set on salmon. As of press time he describes the salmon action as “slow”, but he has put a handful of salmon on the boat recently and most of them have been big husky fish.
Captain Jay Lopes of Right Hook Sportfishing had the Bodega salmon bite dialed in early in the month with limits and near limits, but now with few salmon in the area he too has turned to rockfish and lingcod. Steady limits of both are the word, but Jay is heading offshore in his hunt for kings.
