Can you feel the excitement? If you are a trout angler, you likely can. Pyramid Lake is slated to open for angling on October 1. Lahontan cutthroat trout ranging up to and beyond the 10 pound mark will be the target of anglers fishing on the opener and thereafter.
Early in the season when the water temperature is up, trolling with downriggers is the method of choice. A wide range of lures can be used including Double Flutter Spoons, Apex Lures, E Lures and Flatfish. Orange and green color schemes work well with olive green and frog finishes being the favorites of many locals.
As the water temperature drops the fish start moving into shallower water. Boaters continue to do well at these times, but shore casters and fly anglers start getting in on the action too.
Big trout are caught throughout the entire season at Pyramid, but the late winter and early spring season offers visiting anglers the best chance of hooking a trophy. At this time nearly all of the lake’s trout are shallow, aggressive and thinking of spawning.
