Shad fishing on the Feather River has slowed down at Shanghai Falls, as the shad have moved up to below the rock dam near Live Oak, where boating access is difficult.
“Three of us caught and released 4 shad while using grubs on my latest trip to the river below Shanghai Rapids,” stated Rob Reimers of Rustic Rob’s Guide Service. “Two of the fish were big females in the 3 to 4 pound range, while the other two were small males. We saw another angler in a boat land a couple of shad.”
“The shad fishing at the rock dam, about 8 miles above Yuba City near Live Oak is off the hook,” said Bob Boucke at Johnson’s Bait and Tackle. “The problem is you need a small boat to get up the river and you have to know where the sand bars are.”
A few anglers reported catching stripers from shore while tossing out cut anchovies and sardines. “Most fish run from shakers to 8 pounds,” said Boucke.
Combined releases to the Feather River below the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet are now 1700 cfs.
