Shad Fishing Lights Up

Location: Feather River- Lower,

The shad fishing is hot on the Feather River now. Rob Reimers of Rustic Rob’s Guide Service took out Ron Gaston and his son John for some great action, catching about 20 fish in a couple hours.

The fish were big ones, including some females going 4 to 5 pounds. They used Rob’s custom grubs in pink and chartreuse below Shanghai Falls.

“John landed most of our fish, but took his turn on the net as well,” Reimers revealed. “I think shad are an excellent learning experience on proper netting and fighting of fish.”

“We were the only boat in the area where we fished,” he noted. “There was one bank angler who caught a couple of fish while we were there, but said the fishing had been much better two weeks before.”

Bob Boucke at Johnson’s Bait and Tackle confirmed the top-notch fishing for shad at Shanghai Bend. He noted that shore fishermen, kayakers and anglers with small jet boats are getting a few stripers at Shanghai Falls, Star Bend and Beer Can Beach. The top baits are jumbo minnows, cut anchovies and sardines and top water lures.

The Department of Water Resources has raised combined releases below the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet to 1200 cfs.
