Species: Shad Stripers
Location: American River - Lower, Sacramento River- Middle, Feather River- Lower,

Striped bass fishing has slowed down on the Sacramento River in the metropolitan area, but shad action continues to be very productive.

“Bank anglers and boat fishermen are landing a lot of shad at Verona, Discovery Park and Miller Park,” disclosed James Knight of Broadway Bait Rod & Gun. “Anglers are using a variety of shad darts and jigs.”

For stripers, he recommended heading upriver to Knights Landing to target stripers in the 3 to 10 pound range with jumbo minnows and top water lures.

“The shad fishing is still going strong on the Sacramento below Verona,” reported Mel Gillette at Elkhorn Bait and Tackle in Rio Linda. “We’re selling out of darts in the red/white and red/chartreuse patterns every couple of days.”

He added that adventurous anglers are hooking some quality crappie while fishing crappie jigs and live minnows under bobbers around the wing dams below Verona. Once you locate one, you probably will have found a school.

“The striper fishing locally is winding down, but boaters are still landing stripers while trolling Bombers, Yo-Zuris and other lures, tipped with plastic worms, in the Rio Vista area of the Sacramento,” said Dennis Pfanner at Sacramento Pro Tackle.
