The Fish Sniffer - Shad Surge Into System
Shad Surge Into System

Species: Shad Stripers
Location: Feather River- Lower,

If you like to hook the hard-fighting American shad on fly and spinning gear, now’s the time to hit the Feather River.

“The shad fishing is really going strong at Shanghai Bend for boaters and bank anglers,” said Bob Boucke of Johnson’s Bait and Tackle. “Anglers are using a variety of darts and flies in red/white, chartreuse, orange and pink.”

Most anglers are bank fishing, due to low combined releases of 800 cfs below the Thermalito Afterbay. Kayaks are also a good angling option. You can get a jet boat from Boyd’s Pump to Shanghai Bend, but it’s very difficult on the rest of the river.

Fishermen tossing out jumbo minnows, pileworms, anchovies and sardines or top water lures are bagging a few striped bass at Shanghai and Star bends. Most are small males, but a few larger fish to 30 pounds are showing. Boucke strongly recommends releasing the big females back into the river to preserve the fishery.
