The Fish Sniffer - Shanghai Bend Kicks Out Some Stripers
Shanghai Bend Kicks Out Some Stripers

Written By: Dan Bacher, April 2, 2014
Species: Stripers
Location: Feather River- Lower,

Spring run stripers should begin running into the lower Feather River soon, but right now the fish are still scattered, reported Bob Boucke at Johnsons’ Bait and Tackle.

Anglers can entice the fish with pileworms, anchovies, sardines, live jumbo minnows and top water lures in the Shanghai Bend amd Boyds Pump areas. Boucke advised anglers to release the large females, since with no stripers being planted by the DFW, they are the future of the fishery.

“A father and his two sons reported catching limits of stripers to 12 pounds in the Shanghai Bend area a couple of weeks ago, but the fishing has slowed since then,” reported Tim Boggs of Elkhorn Outdoor Sports in Rio Linda. “They only fished for two hours.”

Steelhead fishing pressure is very light. However, anglers can find some quality steelhead action this year while fishing flies, Glo Bugs, nightcrawlers, small spinners and spoons in the low flow area of the Feather.

Combined releases to the Feather River below the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet are only 800 cfs now.
