Shore Anglers, Kayakers Battle Striped Bass

Low water conditions on the Feather River have made striper fishing tough for boaters, but shore anglers and kayak fishermen are hooking some striped bass.

“Most of the fish are small males, but some larger fish in the 20 to 25 lb. range are showing also,” said Bob Boucke of Johnson’s Bait and Tackle. “The top spots are Shanghai Bend, Star Bend and Beer Can Beach. Anglers are tossing out top water lures, cut bait and live minnows.”

The Sacramento River is a much better bet for stripers. “Chris Spades, who works at the shop, and two anglers ended up with 3 stripers to 10 pounds on his latest trip to Tisdale,” said Boucke “They also released an 8 foot sturgeon. They fooled the sturgeon with a pileworm and the stripers with jumbo minnows.”

Ten-year-old Logan Walsh of Browns Valley bagged a 58 inch, 57 lb. sturgeon while fishing a ghost shrimp/pileworm combo in the Tisdale area.

Combined water releases to the Feather River below the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet remain only 800 cfs.
