The Fish Sniffer - Smallmouths And Largemouths Move Deeper On Reservoir
Smallmouths And Largemouths Move Deeper On Reservoir

Species: Bass Trout Landlocked Salmon
Location: Trinity Lake, Trinity River,

The bass fishing at Trinity Lake has switched over to its summer pattern. After a brief top water bite early in the morning, anglers need to switch over to deep water during the day.

“A friend caught and released a 4 lb. smallmouth while throwing a top water bait on a small surface bait on the north end,” said Tim Brady at Trinity Outdoors.

During the day, anglers should fish deep-diving crankbaits, Gitzits and Senkos at 15 to 25 feet deep. “The bite is holding its own,” said Brady.

For rainbow trout, anglers should tossing out nigthcrawlers, salmon eggs, PowerBait, Kastmasters and spinners in the mouths of the tributaries, including Stewarts Fork, Swift Creek and the Upper Trinity River. “Anglers are hooking fish up to 17 inches, but most are planters in the 10 to 13 inch range,” he observed.”

The landlocked Chinook fishing is apparently slow; Brady hasn’t heard any reports lately. However, if anglers want to catch the kings, he advised trolling deep near the dam with big baits. “These salmon are feeding on 4-1/2 inch kokanee, so you want to use a lure that size, not a 1-1/2 inch hoochie,” he noted.

He hasn’t heard of any reports of spring run Chinooks being taken on the lower Trinity, but some springers are starting to show in the lower Klamath and should appear in the Trinity soon.

The only boat ramp usable now is the Minersville facility on the south end.

Trinity Lake is holding 1,250,008 acre-feet of water, 51 percent of capacity and 61 percent of the 10-year-average. The water level is 2,281.01 feet above sea level.
