Spinners The Ticket To Smallmouth Success
“There isn’t much angling activity on the Russian River with the low, warm water conditions,” said Dave Delmue at King’s Sport & Tackle. “Most anglers are going salmon fishing out of Bodega Bay – and if they’re not doing that, then they’re going rockfish and lingcod fishing.”
The few trying the river are targeting smallmouth bass in the Johnson’s Beach and Guernewood Park areas.
“I caught and released four smallmouths while using yellow/black Rooster Tails at Vacation Beach from shore on a recent trip,” said Delmue. “Then I went drop shotting with worms from a kaytak in the same area a week later, but didn’t get any fish.” .
Expect to hook a lot of 8 to 12 inch fish, along with an occasional bigger fish to 3 pounds.
Recreational boaters, jet skiers and water skiers continue to dominate the water at Lake Sonoma this time of year, but trolling for landlocked steelhead and casting lures for black bass can be good early and late in the day.
