(Yuba City) Salmon fishing has been very tough, with only a few chinooks reported lately. Combined releases to the Feather River below the Thermalito Aferbay Outlet are currently 2300 cfs.
“Anglers fishing with guide Jimmy Zanoco have been hooking some beautiful steelhead in the 3 to 5 pound range,” revealed Bob Boucke at Johnson’s Bait and Tackle. “The fish are hitting nightcrawlers above and below the outlet.”
Stan Cleveland landed a 16 lb. salmon while fishingBrad’s Killerfish near Boyd’s Pump on a recent trip with Boucke, but that’s the only fish they hooked. “The salmon aren’t here yet,” noted Boucke.
Rob Reimers of Rustic Rob’s Guide Service reported catching a fat 20-1/2 inch long steelhead while salmon fishing with a “Speedy Spinner” below Shanghai Bend on Saturday, August 9. “We didn’t hook any salmon,” said Reimers, “although we hooked a king on Thursday.”
“I made a scout trip over the weekend to the outlet hole,” said Manuel Saldana, Jr. of MSJ Guide Service. “The 64 anglers total that I counted, including shore anglers and fishermen in three boats, hooked zero fish while I was there.”
Raith Heryford of RH Guide Guide Service ended up with one 24 lb. salmon while fishing in the outlet hole on Thursday, August 7. The fish hit a green/chrome Brad’s Killer Fishing K116 (green/chrome) on a sardine wrapper laced with Pro- Cure’s Sardine Gel.
“The outlet is really devoid of salmon. The fish are running up into the cooler water towards the hatchery and not holding at the outlet,” said Heryford.
