These are great days for anglers plying the West Delta. The water temperature is now in the middle to upper 50’s and the clarity is good. As a result the spring striper bite has busted open and sturgeon are on the feed too.
Captain David Hammond of Delta Pro Fishing has been spanking the stripers while fishing both above and below Rio Vista on the Sacramento River.
Hammond is hooking the bass while trolling Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows tipped with white plastic worms. Limits and near limit have been the rule. Most of the fish are in the 4 to 7 pound range, but larger fish into the teens are showing too.
Captain Jay Lopes of Right Hook Sportfishing is operating out of the Martinez Marina and has been focused on sturgeon fishing in Suisun Bay. Lopes has been scoring keeper sturgeon daily and many days multiple keepers are coming over the rail.
Lopes is fishing with both roe and eel, but eel is providing the most consistent results at this time.
Other boats departing from Martinez and fishing Suisun Bay include Captain Chris Smith’s Captain Hook and Captain James Smith’s California Dawn. Both of these boats have been boating keepers daily.
On the California Dawn’s most recent trip anglers hooked, landed and released a pair of oversize sturgeon.
Bait anglers working Suisun Bay and the lower Delta have also been picking up stripers. Key baits for the bass have been pile worms, bloodworms and bullheads.
