Stripers And Salmon Show In West Delta

Species: Stripers River Salmon Bass Catfish
Location: Sacramento River- Delta, San Joaquin Delta,

(Pittsburg) Striper action is starting to head up for bait anglers in the West Delta. Salmon fishing has been slow overall, but kings to 28 pounds have been landed over the past two weeks. For consistent action it’s tough to beat targeting catfish or black bass.

Both Benicia Bait and Dockside Bait and Tackle reported improving striper action over the past several days.

Bait anglers are doing the damage while working the upper reaches of Suisun Bay in the Middle Grounds and along the Firing Line. Trophy hunters are soaking live split tails and bullheads for bass up to and beyond 20 pounds, but it takes plenty of patience to hook up. For small keeper size bass shad, bloodworms and cut anchovies are all working.

There have been a few salmon landed by spinner tossers fishing from the bank in Benicia and a few more have been hooked by trollers pulling spinners and Flatfish in the Rio Vista area. With the warm water temperature, the salmon seem to be shooting right on through the Delta.

Sturgeon are holding in deep water areas near Pittsburg, but few anglers are targeting them. If you decide to go after diamond backs, roe, eel and grass shrimp are the must have baits.

Largemouth bass are providing predictable action on both surface and subsurface offerings. Flippers are tossing large Senkos and creature baits, while topwater enthusiasts work the weed lines with poppers and frogs.

For catfish the best fishing is taking place in smaller sloughs in 12 to 25 feet of water. Top baits include mackerel, chicken liver, clams and night crawlers. Anglers are boating up to 18 catfish per outing.
