After a week of heavy wind, the temperatures climbed into the triple-digit range for a few days before the wind reared its ugly head once again at press time. Searching for stripers has preoccupied most anglers, but blue gill and largemouth bass action from the banks are becoming more and more viable with the water temperatures rising.
Captain Mike Gravert of Intimidator Sport Fishing out of Korth’s Pirate’s Lair on the confluence of San Joaquin and Mokelumne Rivers said, “We haven’t thrown in the towel on Delta stripers with Tylo Booth of Manteca landing a quality spawned-out beauty drifting jumbo minnows.”
Mark Delnero of Fin Addict Sport Fishing went out with Larry Frey of Lodi for a bait fishing trip in the San Joaquin River, and they found excellent action on with frozen shad or sardines on the outgoing tide for a total of 17 stripers in the 4 to 8-pound range, keeping three males and a hen.
Jim Pickens of the Fishermen’s Friend in Lodi reported good bait fishing action in Georgianna Slough, the San Andreas and Santa Clara Shoals, the Old River Flats, the Venice Island Sounding Board, and downriver from Lights 33 to 38 near Eddo’s Boat Harbor.
He added, “Top water fishermen are targeting the back sloughs off of either the Mokelumne or the San Joaquin with reports of 20 fish days with stripers ranging from 12 to 20-pounds.” The Delta Wood Bomber has been a popular top water lure for elite striper fishermen targeting the big fish.
For largemouth bass, Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor, found phenomenal action with the ima Squarebill crankbait in red or chartreuse during the windy periods, stating, “This has been one of the best in history with fish everywhere, and the bass are hitting the cranks while they are running through the balls of fry.”
