The Fish Sniffer - Stripers Should Start Biting
Stripers Should Start Biting

Written By: Dan Bacher, April 1, 2014
Species: Stripers
Location: American River - Lower,

The American River from Nimbus Dam to the SMUD power line crossing at the southwest boundary of Ancil Hoffman Park continues to be closed to all fishing until April 30. The purpose of the closure by the Fish and Game Commission is to protect salmon and steelhead imperiled by drought conditions.

Virtually nobody has been fishing the section that remains opens to fishing. Releases to the American River below Nimbus Dam continue to be 500 cfs.

"I haven't heard of anybody fishing for either stripers or steelhead on the lower American lately," reported Uncle Larry Barnes of Sacramento Pro Tackle.

"If I was going to target stripers in the lower American, I would fish the holes below Gristmill, at Howe Avenue or below Cal Expo," Barnes advised. "Try throwing out Pencil Poppers or swimbaits in the early morning and evening hours. There's always some resident stripers holding in this section of river."

Expect shad to begin showing in the lower river in early May. Hopefully, we will get some more rain to boost the water level in Folsom and to increase flows in the river.
