The Fish Sniffer - Stripers Take Center Stage
Stripers Take Center Stage

Species: Stripers
Location: Sacramento River- Delta, San Joaquin Delta,

High winds have been the story on the Sacramento River, leading striper fishermen to focus on the more-protected waters of the San Joaquin. Fortunately, the linesides are cooperating from the mouth of the river at the Antioch Bridge into the San Joaquin River as far south as the Mossdale Bridge.

J.D. Richey of Richey’s Guide Service said, “The Delta continues to be very good to me,” adding, “It was really windy on a recent trip, and we ‘scratched and clawed’ for them in the morning before the wind lay down and we ‘put the wood to them,’ hooking doubles and triples on Pencil Poppers.”

Richey continued, “New fish are still coming into the system as we have been catching and releasing stripers full of eggs or milt with the neon-bright shiny blue lines.”

In addition to the top water lures, Richey has found action with Robo Worm’s 4-inch Ocean Swimbait in bone or white. He has been working the San Joaquin River between the Antioch Bridge and the mouth of the Mokelumne River.

Christian Lauritzen of Lauritzen’s Yacht Harbor in Oakley said, “The past few weeks, our cleaning station has been working overtime when the wind is down.” This time of year you cannot go wrong trolling from the Antioch Bridge all of the way up to Oulton Pt on Twitchell Island, and another place I would look is Mildred Island.”

Largemouth bass are swallowing live jumbo minnows, and they have been selling dozens and dozens of minnows for bank fishermen targeting black bass.

Catfish have shown up along Holland Tract on pile worms, night crawlers, shad, or mackerel. Bluegill and redear sunfihs are available in Clifton Court Forebay, Holland Tract, and around Orwood Marina while a few crappie are still found with live minnows at Eight Mile Road and in Whiskey Slough.
