Sturgeon Scattered Throughout Bay
Written By: Cal Kellogg, March 20, 2013
Species: Saltwater Sturgeon, Sturgeon,
Location: Suisun Bay,
(Benicia) The good news is that sturgeon are scattered in both shallow and deepwater areas throughout Suisun Bay. The bad news is that the fish have been moving around quite a bit and don’t bite everyday. All in all the action is fair and improving.
When the wind cooperates the best area has been just off the Moth Ball Fleet. Big numbers of sturgeon are cruising the fleet. The best bite has been occurring at the beginning and end of the tides. Salmon roe, eel and grass shrimp have been the best baits.
There are solid numbers of stripers and flounders in the bay. Boaters have been picking up schoolie size stripers while soaking shrimp baits intended for sturgeon. If you’d like to tangle with a larger bass, get your hands on some large live bullheads. Bullheads have been hard to come by, but anglers fishing them have caught bass in the 30 inch class.
Shore anglers are catching both flounders and schoolie size bass on shrimp baits and pile worms.
In the Napa River, schoolie size stripers are being caught on cut anchovies and pile worms. Larger bass are being hooked on live bullheads and splittails.
