Target Crappie Around Wing Dams

Species: Panfish Stripers
Location: Sacramento River- Middle,

If you want to catch crappie, try fishing from the bank or boat around the wind dams on the Sacramento River below Verona.

“Anglers are fishing Crappie Bites and medium minnows under bobbers in the back water of the wing dams,” said Tim Boggs at Elkhorn Outdoors. “Two anglers showed me a photo of 35 crappie that they landed while fishing around the wing dams.”

“The striper fishing is tough locally,” reported James Hill at Broadway Bait Rod & Gun. “A few boaters are landing stripers averaging 20 inches long while fishing jumbo minnows from boats in the Port of Sacramento. We haven’t weighed in any fish lately.”

“One local reported landed one keeper striper over the course of two trolling trips to the port and Sacramento Deepwater Channel,” said Bud Pratt at Sacramento Pro Tackle. “The fishing has been slow with the low water conditions.”

The Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Fishing in the City Program will conduct a fishing clinic at Hagan Park on February 1, 8:30 – Noon. The free loan of rods, bait and tackle is available. The pond will be stocked with trout. The park is located at the end of Chase Drive, off Coloma Road in Rancho Cordova. For more information, call (916) 358-2872.
