Anglers fishing the lower American and the mouth of the river at Discovery Park are bagging a few striped bass while trolling and bait fishing as they get ready for the opening of the salmon season on the American and Sacramento rivers on July 16.
Uncle Larry Barnes reported catching and releasing two stripers weighing 6 and 12 pounds while trolling with Yo-Zuris on his latest trip to Discovery Park, according to Dennis Pfanner at Sacramento Pro Tackle. Guys throwing bucktails from shore at the mouth are also picking up a few stripers.
“Anglers throwing out white/chartreuse swimbaits are hooking some striped bass while fishing the holes on the lower American,” said Chris Fulster, Jr. at Broadway Bait Rod & Gun.
Anglers are fishing early and late in the day at a variety of locations, including Sailor Bar, Sunrise, El Manto, Rossmoor Bar, Ancil Hoffman Park, Goethe Park, Gristmill, Watt Avenue, Howe Avenue and below Cal Expo.
The Bureau of Reclamation reduced releases from Nimbus Dam from 2500 cfs to 2000 cfs on June 22 for “ a Delta water quality requirements adjustment,” said Randi Field of the Bureau.
