Trollers Nail Big Browns

An amazing brown trout bite is raging at Lake Almanor. Trollers are hooking fish that average 4 pounds and the largest trout range up to 8. Top line trolling is the method of choice.

“The Almanor spring brown bite is on and we are doing really well. This is certainly some of the most exciting action of the year so far,” exclaimed Captain Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy’s Guide Service. “Rapalas are the top lure right now and silver and black is the hot color. The browns will hit other colors, but not as well as they hit the silver model. I’ve been using large No. 13 plugs because a lot of the pond smelt are running large. We cleaned a 4.5 pound brown a few days ago and as near as we could count it had parts of 40 smelt in it’s stomach.”

“Most of the browns we’ve caught this week have fallen in the 3 to 5 pound class, but are largest fish have been falling between 7 and 8 pounds. We are targeting these big fish in shallow water, so when we hook up the fight is pretty exciting. We’ve picked up a few smallmouth bass while trolling, but we haven’t seen any rainbows or kings over the past week,” added Roccucci.
