The Fish Sniffer - Trollers Work Hard For Trout And Kings
Trollers Work Hard For Trout And Kings

Written By: Dan Bacher, August 3, 2014
Species: Trout Landlocked Salmon Kokanee
Location: Lake Almanor, Bucks Lake,

(Chester) “The salmon and trout bite is really soft at Lake Almanor this summer,” said Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy’s Guide Service. “Trollers are hooking maybe 5 to 7 fish per day while trolling the East Branch of the Lake.”

The fish are mostly rainbows, with a few browns and king salmon mixed in. The fish average 2-1/2 pounds each, with an occasional fish in the 4 to 5 pound class.

“There is a massive amount of feed, including hex and damsel flies, and the pond smelt are showing everywhere,” said Roccucci, so the fish are stuffing themselves.

He recommended trolling a variety of offerings early in the day while hugging the bottom, usually 40 feet or more. Anglers are pulling Speedy Shiners and other spoons and dodger/worm and dodger/Gulp! Minnow combinations.

For numbers of fish, anglers should head to Bucks Lake. “Bucks Lake is still producing good fishing for kokanee and rainbows in the 10 to 14 inch range,” said Roccucci. “They’re staging in the creek inlets.”

The hot set-ups are Double Super Charged U.V. Pro-Troll Flashers teamed up with pink hoochies or Uncle Larry’s Tropical Tiger or Bloody Tiger spinners. The rainbows are hitting at 20 to 25 feet deep, while the kokanee are showing at 35 to 45 feet deep.

“The lake level is still down, but the boat ramps are in the water,” he noted. “Pay attention to hazards when launching and boating on the lake.”
