Trolling Remains Top Trout Method
Bank fishing for square-tailed holdover rainbow trout at Frenchman Lake is on the upswing with the cooler weather.
“Fishing from shore seems to be picking up this week at Frenchman Lake,” said Richard Wiggin of Wiggin’s Trading Post. “Derek from Meadow Vista and Brian from Chilcoot caught 3 nice rainbows at Turkey Point using nightcrawlers for bait on Sunday.”
“They were running a 24 to 28 inch leader 45 ft. off shore. Their fish measured between 13 and 15 inches. The largest one weighed about 2 lbs,” said Wiggin.
Charlie Gross from Coos Bay, OR and his daughter, Karen Stoll from Reno caught 2 rainbows from the shore at Frenchman boat launch. They were fishing between 8 am and noon using glitter rainbow PowerBait and baby nightcrawlers.
“We have also received several reports of fish being caught from the shore at the dam with nightcrawlers,” he added.
Lake Davis trout fishing is best for trollers, since bank fishing has been slow lately.
Jeanne Graham of J&J’s Grizzly Store and Camping Resort in Portola recommended trolling with Dick Nites in pearl hot head for the best action on 16 to 20 inch rainbows. The trout are still holding deep, but expect them to move into shallower water as the water cools.
