Trout action at Lake Shasta has improved over the past week with a more steady bite being found throughout the lake.
Mike Elster of Mike’s Fishing Guide Service reported, “Rainbows have been hitting in the top 25 feet of water with kings running in the 65-80 foot depth. We have been trolling Apex lures, Humdingers, and Wiggle Hoochies in a Captain America or red/white/blue patterns. I have caught a few nice kings in the 2.5-3 pound range pulling blue Wiggle Hoochies, which was a surprise to me when shad had been the best producer.”
Shasta's trout remains scattered throughout the lake. Anglers are hooking rainbows in the slot between slaughterhouse island and toupee island. The water is somewhat stained and the lake has been experiencing high winds making the fishing tougher. The fish have been from 14 to 16 inches and limits are possible for fishermen that work for them.
Spawning bass action is underway for Shasta's spotted bass. You can find fish around main lake points and flats. Some fish are holding up tight to the bank, but there are still plenty of fish holding 15 to 30 feet deep. 4 and 6 inch Mother's Finest Worms in natural colors are working well as are 4 inch Senkos. Trophy hunters are tossing swimbaits in the 4 to 6 inch size range.

The lake level elevation was 979.65 feet and just 87.35 feet below full pool at press time.
