The Fish Sniffer - Union Valley Kokanee Salmon Bite Sizzles
Union Valley Kokanee Salmon Bite Sizzles

Species: Kokanee Trout
Location: Union Valley Reservoir, French Meadows Reservoir, Hell Hole Reservoir,

Like clockwork, Union Valley kokanee kicked off their season in mid-to late May and anglers are reaping the rewards. Placerville anglers John Marino and Rick Schrichfield found limits working the Camino Cove area of the lake.

“We trolled from the powerhouse to Camino Cove and found limits of nice kokanee 20-26 feet deep,” said Marino. “Sling Blades and hoochies paired with anice/bloody tuna scented corn did the trick.”

“Both Hell Hole and French Meadows are launchable for large boats,” said John Wadden at Will Fish Bait and Tackle. “Hell Hole has been producing a nice brown trout bite for anglers pulling an F-9 to F-11 sized Rapalas in vampire in the Powerhouse area of the lake. A few reports show that crawler/dodger combos and white hoochies are also working well too.”

French Meadows anglers pulling crawlers and dodgers in the top ten feet are also finding trout in the dam and creek inlet area.

Placerville angler Sean McKenna (sniffer board handle ‘toomanyhobbies’) found pretty decent action at Sly Park Lake.

“We pulled in nine fish – one shy of the two limits we were looking for,” said Sean. ”It wasn’t red hot, but we found willing fish in the first dam area hitting on salmon eggs and PowerBait – all tossed from shore.”

Loon Lake stands at 89%, Union Valley is at 94% capacity, and Ice House is at 100%.
