Location: American River - Lower,
The American River from Nimbus Dam to the SMUD power line crossing at the southwest boundary of Ancil Hoffman Park will reopen to fishing on May 1. The purpose of the closure by the Fish and Game Commission is to protect salmon and steelhead imperiled by drought conditions.
Virtually nobody has been fishing the section that remains opens to fishing. Releases to the American River below Nimbus Dam continue to be 500 cfs.
There may be a few spring run steelhead showing in the upper section when the river reopens, but don't expect great fishing, due to the low flows. You can hook the steelies while tossing out nightcrawlers, spinners, spoons and plugs. Most of the spring-run fish run 2 to 5 pounds, with a smattering of 5 to 8 lb. steelhead.
Expect shad to begin showing in the lower river in early May. Hopefully, we will get some more rain to boost the water level in Folsom and to increase flows in the river.
